Caldecott House
This wooden, two-story dollhouse with an attic is my first dollhouse. It was my 1995 J-term project. When I
purchased the house for $18 in an antique shop in Racine, it had no roof, no paint, no electricity, no inhabitants, etc. Today, it houses clues for every Caldecott Medal winning book since 1938. How many can you find? Note clues for other favorite books, as well, and the fireplace. It’s made of Lake Michigan pebbles and blue beach glass. The plaque near the front door is a photo of the real plaque, which appears on Caldecott’s house in London, near the British Museum.
The Caldecott Medal, one of the most prestigious awards in children’s literature, honors outstanding picture book illustration in the U.S. during the previous year. The American Library Association administers this annual award, which is named for the nineteenth century English Illustrator, Randolph Caldecott, who wrote and illustrated The House that Jack Built.
