Racine Wagon and Carriage Company
The network of eighteen buildings was originally built starting in the 1870s. The plant covered ten acres, extending from 16th Street to the Milwaukee Road tracks. The Racine Wagon and Carriage Company produced high grade heavy platform wagons, vans, surreys, carriages, express and deliver wagons, spring wagons, laundry wagons, and phaetons. The company also produced all types of ambulances, police patrol wagons, and fire apparatus on a custom basis.
All wagons manufactured by the company began as basic materials. The company ground its own paint; built its bodies, gears, and tops; manufactured its cushions, backs, dashes, fenders, and forgings; and made its own wheels, welding the axles and tires with electricity. Vehicles ranged in price from $50 to $1000. The annual capacity of this mammoth manufacturing concern at one time reached 50,000 rigs.
